🐹 Little Critters This Sunday, Nail Trim Tips for Rex Rabbits πŸ’ˆ

If you aren't sure if your rabbit is due for a nail trim, one trick that usually works is to see if their nails are sticking out past the fur. But what if you have a rex rabbit, with nails that always stick out past their short - and incredibly plush - fur?

Most rabbits benefit from a nail trim every 8 weeks, which is how often our adorable furry friend Rupert hops by for a trim at our shop.

If they have light nails, you can usually easily find a pink area inside the nail - otherwise known as the quick - that starts at the base of the nail (the orange arrow in the picture below). A good practice is to trim a little further out from where the quick is (the green line in picture).

If they have dark nails, you can use a flashlight or LED clippers to see the end of the quick. Sometimes it can be a little tricky, so we suggest doing a very light press with the clippers before cutting all the way through. If the bunny yanks their paw back, you are probably too close and should cut a little further out than the scour marks you made.

If you hit the quick, the nail will bleed a little so it's good to have styptic powder on hand to cauterize the wound. Don't be too hard on yourself if this happens; even the most seasoned groomer occasionally hits the quick and styptic power will usually stop the bleeding quickly.

Post-trim Rupert's nails seemed long from afar, but it was a good amount for him; a little off the tips right past the end of the quick.

Like many of you, we were saddened by the recent loss of three cherished bunny friends: Lennon the Bunny and Miffy & Mikka. Each of them brought a special kind of joy, comfort, and gentle magic into the world β€” the kind that lingers long after they've gone. In moments like these, we’re reminded how important it is to allow space for grief β€” to name it, sit with it, and be supported through it. If you’re navigating a similar journey, we invite you to read our recent blog post: The Full Circle...
